Building healthier communities in the borough!

food-4-thoughtIt is a time when lots of people are interested in growing their own food. There are several schools in the Borough who are already using their school grounds to grow food, which benefits the children’s education as well as the surrounding community in the way of fresh produce. There is no better way to engage the community than to give them the opportunity to take ownership of a small part of their local environment. The Food4Thought project aims to encourage more schools and community groups to take an interest in gardening and growing food. There are huge benefits to adopting a healthier lifestyle of tending to a plot and being more aware of where our food comes from. It can also be an exciting learning experience.

There are plenty of resources out there for advice, but what the Food4Thought project does is bring it down to a manageable aim with a local perspective. Kent High Weald Partnership and Pepenbury are devising a foolproof calendar which will guide anyone through starting an allotment and how to maintain one.

Three hub allotment sites are being developed as part of the project. These are located at Oakley School, Sherwood Park Community Primary School and Pepenbury. You will be able to visit these places to ask questions and see examples of a successful allotment.
