The Compost Advisor Project has been developed by
BTCV in partnership with Kent County Council's "War on Waste"
campaign. BTCV Project Officer Pauline Chamberlain has recruited
and trained 57 compost advisors across Kent who are able to offer
advice and help to any one who wants to produce crumbly nutrient-rich
compost for their garden and at the same time reduce the amount
of waste which goes to landfill. The motivation for the project
is simple:
· Over 700 000 tonnes of household waste was collected in
Kent last year.
· The cost of disposing this rubbish £48.2million
One third was not waste at all it was vegetable and garden material,
which could have been turned into free useful compost.
So far 12 000 compost bins have been sold to residents by local
councils keen to reduce the amount of waste going to rapidly filling
landfill sites. Wye based BTCV wants to make sure that these bins
continue to be used successfully and that more and more people take
up home composting supported by Compost Advisors.
Compost advisors need no special qualities as full training is
given. Each advisor receives a compost bin as well as information
literature, equipment and training and the knowledge that they have
played a role in Kent's "War on Waste" BTCV hope to recruit
120 advisors eventually For more information contact the BTCV on
