Pepenbury parent toddler walks

This is a short circular walk suitable for toddlers and all terrain buggies through an ancient and beautiful bluebell wood

This small woodland is typical of the High Weald. We know from ancient maps and texts that it has been woodland for hundreds of years. During that time it has been managed by humans for the valuable resource of wood it offers both as a fuel and building materials. As long ago as the Stone Age the thin bendy branches of hazel trees would have been used to make shelters.· Later, in Tudor times, wood would have been used to make charcoal for the local iron industry. Trees would be coppiced so their wood could be harvested for many years. Now the Pepenbury Community continue this woodland management, harvesting wood for their own uses that still includes charcoal making.

The site is owned and managed by Pepenbury which is a charity supporting people with learning disabilities. The woodland provide useful and fulfilling work activities for people with a range of learning disabilities.
