Current and Future Work at Lamberhurst |
|
The Kent High Weald Partnership is working with Lamberhurst Parish Council on a new project for this important Local Wildlife Site. Work has taken place between October 2010 to March 2011 to help improve the Lamberhurst Gravel Pit for people and wildlife, as well as support the establishment of a new community group, and encourage young people to take an active interest in the countryside. The Friends of Lamberhurst Common began a volunteer project in October to help clear a circular path around one side of the Gravel Pit. This path, which has re-opened access to a shallow edge of the pond, will help to enhance habitat conditions as well as pedestrian access.
Following a public meeting to discuss ideas and air questions or concerns, Lamberhurst Parish Council gave their approval in October 2010 to apply to the Heritage Lottery Fund for a grant for Lamberhurst Common. The grant, which will seek to continue the work started by the Friends in 2010, will explore the history and educational opportunities presented by the Common. The project, which is entitled 'Jack Frost's Footsteps' will research the recent history of the Gravel Pit and other common land. Jack Frost lived in the Gravel Pit during the early 20th century, working as a cooper, and coppicing small trees for firewood. The HLF grant will support archive research, oral histories, and new interpretation for the site; all of which will shed light on how life must have been for Jack, and those who came before him. An education and public events program will also take place, to help bring to life the history of the Common, and encourage people of all ages to look after the site, its heritage and its wildlife, for years to come.
