Urban Wildlife Gardening Scheme

Domestic gardens have the potential to play a crucial role in supporting urban biodiversity. In the U.K., residential zones can account for more than 60% of urban land area. Consequently, private gardens may represent a significant proportion of greenspace in a town.

An exciting new pilot project is underway in the Showfields area of Tunbridge Wells. Organised by the Kent High Weald Partnership (KHWP), Town & Country Housing Group (TCHG) and funding support from Tunbridge Wells Borough Council, the new 'Urban Wildlife Garden Scheme' aims to 'wildlife-up' your garden!

This may sound like you just leave your garden to go wild, but in fact wildlife gardens can be beautifully decorative. Imagine fragrant butterfly bushes and wildflowers nodding their heads in the breeze, the buzz of dragonflies as they whizz over a pond and the fun you can have watching birds feeding just outside your window. There is plenty of room for people and wildlife, even in the smallest of areas!

KHWP working with the local community of Showfields will be offering advice, recruiting volunteers and doing a few garden make-over’s to demonstrate how a little imagination can go a long way for wildlife.

The aim of the project is;

  • Promoting positive contact between people and wildlife;
  • Enhancing the quality of peoples health and well-being;
  • Furthering the understanding of the links between people and wildlife;
  • Establishing a community gardening group or feed into Garden Share Scheme;
  • Improving gardens which lack in wildlife value;
  • Making better use of under utilised gardens
  • Encouraging people to grow and cook home grown produce

If you live in the Showfields area and are interested in joining the scheme we would love to hear from you, call Sarah Tree on 01580 212972.
