Hilbert's Wood Local Nature Reserve is situated in Grosvenor Recreation Ground in Tunbridge Wells. Grosvenor Recreation Ground was given to Tunbridge Wells Borough Council in the 1930s when Charity Farm closed down which contained areas of woodland that are over 400 years old. Hilbert Woods are named after the mother of a councillor Lydia Hilbert. It is a popular site and is well used by residents and dog walkers from the surrounding area.
Each winter we coppice an area of the hazel woodland so that sunlight can reach the woodland floor and encourage new growth, this replicates how many woodlands were managed when wood was an important source of fuel. This method gives other plants and flowers that support a variety of rare animals and insects a chance to grow.
During the summer months we concentrate on improving access to the woodlands, we do this by building steps and installing boardwalks, which makes it easier for less able users and people with pushchairs to access the woods throughout the year.
